The Bounty was an English merchant ship of 1787, made famous by the mutiny that took place in 1789. The ship, commanded by Captain William Bligh, was on a mission to the Leeward Islands to transport breadfruit trees to the Caribbean. After a long stay on Tahiti, the sailors turned against Bligh, put him and his loyalists in a sloop at sea and took over the ship.
The ship was originally a merchant vessel purchased by the British Navy in 1787 for a botanical mission.
The ship transported breadfruit trees from Tahiti to the British colonies in the Caribbean, as this was a very cheap type of food for the slaves.
The uprising took place on April 28, 1789, as the crew had a good time on Haiti.
The crew of the bounty dropped off Captain Bligh and 18 loyal crew members in a rowboat. Bligh and his men survived the overboarding.
The mutineers settled on the remote island of Pitcairn, where they burned the Bounty to hide their location.
