Why choose cast iron
Cast iron is solid, extremely durable and perfectly suited to statues. The material keeps its shape and shows a lot of detail, so animals, busts and abstract forms really come into their own, such as the ‘Silence’ face cast iron 35 cm. Left untreated outdoors, a rust patina develops that acts as a protective layer and gives the piece an authentic, rugged look. Prefer a darker accent? Then choose a coated variant. Thanks to these properties, cast-iron figurines and large sculptures fit effortlessly with a wide range of styles, from industrial and vintage to modern and rural. For indoors and outdoors: where does your statue look best
Outdoors, draw the eye to your terrace, path or lawn with a statue on a plinth or placed directly on the patio. Think of a rooster by the pond edge or a love couple at the entrance. Indoors, cast iron works beautifully as a contrasting accent on a sideboard, in the hall, on a mantel or in an office. The weight provides stability, even in busy spaces, while the compact base often takes up little room. Styling tip: pair a statue with a plant in cast-iron garden vases, a lantern or wall decoration for extra depth, or place two smaller statues mirrored for a calm, symmetrical effect. For a rugged combination in the garden you can nicely coordinate cast iron with metal garden decoration by Talen Staphorst.
Our collection at a glance
At Eliassen you will find a broad selection for every taste and size. Popular are the abstract love couples in heights of approximately 70 to 160 cm for a bold statement by the front door or on the terrace. For a playful touch choose an animal figure, such as a rooster of around 40 cm. Or go for the compact owl cast iron 17 cm. Prefer classic? Then busts, such as Beethoven or historical figures, are ideal for the living room or study. Want to add a religious accent? Choose, for example, the Mary statue cast iron 38 cm. Smaller statues too, such as an angel on sphere around 20 cm or a Native American of about 30 cm, are perfect to subtly add atmosphere on a shelf or side table — or make more impact with a larger piece such as the cast-iron statue standing angel 85 cm. Maintenance, finish and placement
Cast iron can stay outside all year round. Untreated, a rust layer forms that protects the statue and creates a warm patina. If you want to preserve the current appearance or slow down rusting, you can periodically apply a clear outdoor varnish or wax. Clean easily with lukewarm water and a soft brush; aggressive agents are not necessary. Curious about the craft behind metal sculptures? Our blog about bronze casting explains it step by step.
When placing, ensure a flat, solid surface and take the weight into account when moving. Cast iron is strong, but a fall can cause it to break or chip a corner. For indoor use, consider felt under the base to prevent scratches. Outdoors, you can use a plinth or mounting plate for extra stability. Not sure about the size or finish for your location? Frequently asked questions about cast-iron statues
Can a cast-iron statue stay outside all year
Yes. Cast iron is weather-resistant. Untreated, a rust patina forms that acts as a natural protective layer. If you want to retain the appearance or reduce rusting, treat periodically with a clear outdoor varnish or wax.
Which types of cast iron are there and which do you use
Broadly speaking there are gray cast iron, ductile cast iron and white cast iron. For statues, gray or ductile cast iron is most commonly used because of its good castability, detail reproduction and robustness. This results in crisp forms and a long service life.
How do I choose the right size for my space
Look at viewing distance and sight lines. Indoors, a height up to the viewer’s shoulder often works best. Outdoors, the statue may be larger so it stands out in open space. If needed, test the footprint on location with tape or cardboard.
How do I recognize quality in cast-iron statues
Watch for neatly finished seams, consistent wall thickness, a stable base and crisp detail in relief or facial features. Weight and balance are important, as is a tidy finish of the coating or an even patina on untreated cast iron.
