The moai are representations of ancestors begging for fertility. Reproduction was crucial to survival on an extremely isolated island like this one. Many ancestor statues have been put back upright, also many have their penetrating eyes looking to the sky back. The protruding lips were perhaps adorned with a beard. Also notable are the elongated earlobes. Moai are large stone statues located on Easter Island.
