The ocean liner Titanic was a highly luxurious passenger ship that collided with an iceberg on her maiden voyage on April 14, 1912 and sank shortly thereafter, resulting in the death of more than 1,500 people on board. The ship, owned by the White Star Line shipping company, was considered at the time a technological mariner’s ingenuity. It was thought that the Titanic could not sink because the ship was equipped with many safety measures, such as watertight compartments. This shipwreck made a big impression and led to improved safety regulations at sea.
