The world-famous sailing ship the Endeavour was a British discovery ship commanded by Lieutenant James Cook that made its first voyage of discovery to Australia and New Zealand from 1769 to 1771. The ship, originally a coal freighter named Earl of Pembroke, was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1768 for a scientific expedition to the Pacific and mapping new territories. After its famous voyage, the ship served as a freighter and later as a troopship during the American War of Independence, before being sunk on purpose in 1778 to create a blockade.
The ship sailed from England in 1768 for a voyage to the Pacific Ocean to observe the Venus transit and explore the supposedly unknown southern continent (Terra Australis Incognita). During this trip, Cook mapped much of the coastlines of Australia and New Zealand. In 1770 the ship ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef, but it was beached for repairs with the help of the tide and its strong oak hull.
After the voyage, the ship was used for cargo transport to the Falkland Islands for three years.
In 1775, the ship was renamed and sold, but it was recommissioned during the American War of Independence to transport troops.
In 1778, the ship was sunk in the port of Newport, Rhode Island, USA, to participate in a blockade and prevent French ships from passing through.
The wreck was recently identified and lies at the bottom of Newport Harbor. A replica of the Endeavour lies in Sydney Harbour where you can view the ship …
