The Batavia was a 17th-century VOC mirror ship, built in 1628, made famous by its 1629 shipwreck off the coast of Australia and the subsequent massacres of the survivors. Today, a replica of the ship is on display at Museum Batavialand in Lelystad.
The ship was used for trade voyages to the Dutch East Indies and was a symbol of the power of the VOC, designed for long and dangerous voyages.
It carried valuable goods such as silver, gold and jewelry, as well as sandstones for the construction of a gate in Batavia (today’s Jakarta).
On June 4, 1629, the ship ran aground on a reef off the coast of Western Australia after a storm.
Mutiny broke out among the stranded sailors, with many of their colleagues killed before help arrived.
