• Very much of this series also on display in our storeGayatri is an aspect of Sarasvati. In a legend from the Skanda Purana, Gayatri became Brahma’s second wife. At an offering, Savitri (Sarasvati) showed up late, whereupon Brahma instructed Indra to find another wife for him. Indra returned with the milkmaid Gayatri, and Rudra and Vishnoe married them. Then Savitri came and Brahma tried to apologize, but Savitri is furious and curses all concerned: Brahma will no longer be worshiped except one day a year; Indra will be bound in chains by his enemies and imprisoned in a foreign land; Vishnoe will be born among men and his wife Lakshmi will be stolen from him; Rudra will lose his manhood; Agni will devour all pure and impure things; Indrani, the wife of Indra, will be coveted by Nahusha, Indra’s temporary successor; even the priests and Brahmins will be cursed by her and the wives of the gods will be barren. When Savitri had left angrily, Gayatri managed to soften the curses. The Padma Purana relates that Savitri returned and Brahma asked her what she thought he should do with Gayatri. Gayatri threw himself at her feet, whereupon Savitri said, a wife should obey her husband and they would be united with Brahma.
