In Buddhism, the Oriental name Guanyin means the goddess of mercy, compassion and comfort. In Japan, this image also occurs, but then she is called Kwannon. This goddess helps to achieve enlightenment. She was originally male but evolved into a female goddess. Guanyin blessed women with offspring and is sometimes depicted with a child on his lap.
