  • Shiva is one of the most important gods of Hinduism. He is often depicted as an ascetic. He is dressed in a tiger skin or an elephant skin, both are references to two demons that he has ever destroyed. His body is greyish or white in color because he rubs himself with the ashes of the cremation sites. He wears his hair in long braided locks as many ascetics wear in India. He has three eyes, the third adorns his forehead. From this third eye he can allow fire to take place and with that he destroys the universe when the creation comes to an end. Shiva unites in his stature and in the attributes he carries with him many contradictions. This is what Hindus explains, because he is a god who embraces the entire universe, from high to low, from pure to unclean. For example, he wears an earring in his one ear that is exclusively worn by low-chested village women, while in his other ear an earring hangs in the shape of a mythical crocodile as only brahmins wear. In one of his hands he carries a drum, damaroe, which looks like an hourglass. With this drum he indicates the rhythm of creation. One of his other hands carries a blazing fire with which he destroys the world. On his head he carries flowers including the highly toxic datura, a flower from which hallucinogenic substances can be distilled. Around his neck he carries poisonous snakes, symbols of death. On his head he also wears a crescent moon, a death symbol. His mount is the bull Nandi. Nandi is almost always in front of the entrance of a Shiva temple. Shiva is traditionally the god of ascetics. Many of his followers are saddhu's (holy men), who wander alone or in groups throughout India, smeared their bodies with ashes, often do bizarre penance and are recognizable by the three horizontal stripes they have painted on their foreheads. . Their attribute is the trident. The women of Shiva are known by many forms and names. Parvati is the most famous eega of Shiva, who has become the symbol of the docile subject woman. She had to patiently watch as Shiva did some adultery with clean ladies, but he always came back to her. Parvati is the peaceful form of the concept of shakti (feminine energy). However, it can also manifest itself in other savage forms: Durga, Chamunda or Kali. Durga is often worshiped as an independent goddess, who in itself has nothing to do with Shiva. She is specially created, with her own weapons to save the gods from a terrible disaster. As Kali ('the black one'), Parvati appears in her most terrible form. She is black, her tongue is hanging out of her bloody mouth, hanging with severed human heads and skulls, and wandering over horrible death-seekers. She is expected to offer help where no god has any more power. It is also striking that the very lowest cabinets are allowed to worship her, which makes her supporters so great. She is the only one who receives blood sacrifices; During her festival countless black, male animals ranging from cats to buffalo are sacrificed to her.
